Just One Bite Rat Poison Review: Chunks, Bars, Pellets | 2022 Buyer’s Guide

What is the best Just One Bite poison? To kill rodents in agricultural areas, use the Just One Bite II product line. These baits contain a potent and very toxic ingredient, bromadiolone, which kills fast. Since bromadiolone is dangerous for humans and non-target species as it has no antidote, it can be applied only in agricultural areas. The Just One Bite II baits are available in chunks, pellet packs, and bars. There are two products from this brand that can be used in residential areas: a bait station preloaded with bromethalin-based poison and slow-acting multi-feed bars made with diphacinone.

Farnam Just One Bite II Bait Chunks
These chunks with nibble ridges are ideal for use in a bait station. Made with highly toxic fast-acting bromadiolone, it can be used only in and around agricultural buildings. The 8lbs pint contains 64 chunks.

Why Choose Just One Bite Baits?

Who else but farmers know what a disaster rodents can be. No big surprise, then, that owners of agricultural facilities and farmers are among Just One Bite customers. Established three decades ago, this brand has gained a reputation for high-quality and efficient rodent poison. Just One Bite products are good at both attracting and killing mice and rats. Compared to other poisons, they work much faster.

Farnam Just One Bite II Bait Chunks, 8lbs (64, 2 oz chuncks)

Based on a highly potent formula, Just One Bite baits kill after just one feeding. However, this involves some restrictions as the poison cannot be placed anywhere. Yes, you can use it both indoors and outdoors but make sure that neither children nor pets or livestock have access to it. This stuff is extremely toxic.

Initially, Just One Bite baits were designed as an alternative to products made with warfarin. This multi-dose bait has been on the market for half a century and was credited for its odorless properties. The problem with warfarin is that it isn’t potent and, more importantly, many rats populations have already developed resistance to it. And this is where Just One Bite poisons come to the rescue.

Apart from being powerful and fast-acting poisons, these baits are available in easy-to-use chunks, bars, or pellets. While the price is a little bit higher compared to some other competitive products, Just One Bite baits come in large quantities, something that makes them economical. Generally, a single dose is lethal for mice and rats, but it takes a couple of days for them to die after poisoning.

Three Types of Just One Bite Baits: What’s the difference?

There are three types of rodent poisons offered by this brand. Just One Bite II, Just One Bite EX, and Rodentex. The major difference lies in active ingredients used: bromadiolone, bromethalin, and diphacinone, respectively.

Different Toxicity Levels

Why did the company need to introduce new types of baits when it already had a powerful poison? The thing is that in 2011, the EPA changed the rules for rodent toxic baits to lower the risk of accidental poisoning to non-target animals and children. Now, more potent and dangerous toxicants can be used in agricultural areas only. The Just One Bite complies with EPA standards and offers a line of products designed for different applications. While Just One Bite II poisons are solely for agricultural use, Rodentex and Just One Bite EX can be used indoors. But there are certain rules for poison placement: these products must be put inside a bait station and in packages of no more than one pound.

Chunks vs Pellets vs Bars

Also, these products use different formulations: Just One Bite II poisons are made in the form of chunks, bars, and pellets, while Just One Bite EX is available in pellets, blocks, and bait stations. Eight years ago, the company launched the third type of its rodent poisons: diphacinone-based Rodentex bars.

Chunks are the best choice for use in bait stations. They are sized specifically for this purpose and will perfectly fit into any bait station. The second type is a no-touch pellet place pack. The trick is that you do not need to open the pack and spread out the poisons. Rodents will readily gnaw through it and get their lethal dose.

The advantage of using pellet place packs is that you do not touch the dangerous substance during the placement. And finally, there are individually wrapped bars. The main benefit they offer is flexibility. You can break such a bar into smaller two-ounce bars to cover a larger area. Handle with care, and as always read the label directions carefully to learn how to safely handle these baits.

A Review of Just One Bite Products

Below, you will find a review of Just One Bite products at a price ranging from $20 to $60. You may choose fast-acting rodent baits made with bromadiolone and bromethalin or a slow-acting poison based on diphacinone. There is also a preloaded bait station for safe in-home placement.

Just One Bite II Rat & Mouse Baits

Based on bromadiolone, these products are highly toxic and can be used only in and around agricultural buildings. This is a fast-acting blood thinner that works by preventing blood clotting. A single dose is lethal to both mice and rats. That said, Just One Bite II poisons do not cause bait shyness because rodents do not die immediately after consuming the substance but rather within several days. They work well against house mice, roof rats, and Norway rats, including warfarin-resistant ones.

Farnam Just One Bite II Bait Chunks, 8lbs (64, 2 oz chuncks)

You can choose from three different baits of this type depending on whether you want to use chunks, pellets, or bars. The Farnam Just One Bite II Bait Chunks come in an 8-pound pint containing 64 two-ounce chunks. Nibble ridges make these chunks even more attractive for rodents to gnaw, meaning they will get a sufficient amount of poison. The product was treated with methoprene to prevent insect infestation.

This bait is very popular with customers and enjoys a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars. One of the buyers says that, by his estimation, he has killed over a hundred mice with this poison. Another satisfied customer recommends placing the chunks in a ziplock bag, crushing them with a hammer, and sprinkling along rodent runways.

Farnam Just One Bite II 1.5-Ounce Pellet Packs For Rodents, 86 Count

The second option is the Farnam Just One Bite II 1.5-Ounce Pellet Packs. The container includes 86 pellet packs, with each weighing 1.5 ounces. This product is safer to handle because you do not have to open a pack, rodents will chew it through. In addition to that, pellet packs allow you to monitor the activity of mice or rats. Even though a rodent has not eaten enough poison, the torn pack will give you an indication that you have chosen the right place for the bait.

Customers like this product. One of them says that he had a terrible rat problem in the chicken coop: they ate eggs, destroyed trees, and were running all over the area. Neither traps nor other poisons helped. When placing these pellets, he saw the result after three days. Every day after, he was finding 7 to 13 dead rats, and there are no rats anymore.

Farnam Just One Bite II Rat & Mouse Bar 8pk 8lb

The Just One Bite II Rat & Mouse Bar has 8 pounds of poison baits. It is a pack of eight Individually wrapped bars, with each weighing one pound. About 77% of buyers gave the product five stars, which speaks to its quality. One of them says that these bars have completely eliminated her Central Florida rats, with dead rodents appearing the next day after placement. But make sure that your livestock does not have access to the poison because chickens, for example, take it for corn. When placing the pellets, break them in small pieces, otherwise, mice and rats will not touch them.

Just One Bite Ex Bait Station for House Mice

Farnam Just One Bite EX Mouse Bait Station 3pk

If your mice are resistant to blood thinners, use the Farnam Just One Bite EX Bait Station that comes preloaded with poison. The active ingredient of this bait is bromethalin, a highly toxic poison that affects the nervous system of the animal and kills it after a single dose. When a mouse eats such a bait, it stops feeding and dies within days. Depending on the dosage, bromethalin can cause an acute or a chronic syndrome.

Although this bait can be placed in residential areas, it should be out of reach of children and pets as there is no antidote for it. Besides, bromethalin-based products are considered to be safer to use around non-target animals. When the poisoned mouse dies, the dangerous substance is fully excreted from its body. Should any predator consume the dead rodent, it will not ingest the poison.

The nice part about this product is that you will not have to deal with poison baits. They are already incorporated into the bait station. One pack includes 3 disposable bait stations measuring 2 x 6 x 9 inches. The bait blocks are moisture-resistant, so you can place it both indoors and outdoors as well as in damp spaces. This product is designed for mice and is not suitable for rat control. Half of the buyers are satisfied with the Just One Bite Ex Bait Station, saying that it is safe for pets and helps to get rid of a mouse problem.

Farnam Rodentex

Farnam Rodentex Multi-Feed Bars, 4 lbs,1 Pound (Pack of 4)

The most recent rodent bait from the Just One Bite brand is the Farnam Rodentex Multi-Feed Bars. Formulated with diphacinone, it is the least toxic and safest option on the list. This ingredient is a slow-acting poison, meaning a rodent needs to consume multiple doses to die from internal bleeding. This makes diphacinone bait a better choice for placement in residential areas where there is a risk that non-target animals or small children may find and eat it. When enough poison is accumulated in the body, the rodent dies.

The Rodentex contains four 16-ounce bars that are resistant to mold and moisture. It remains effective under any weather condition, both in dry and wet environments. The product maintains freshness for a longer time because each bar comes individually wrapped. Before placement, break down the bars into smaller pieces.

Just One Bite vs Slow Poisons Tomcat & Jt Eaton

Just One Bite is not the only trusted manufacturer in the market, so how do you know which one to choose? Let’s look at the most established brands, Tomcat and JT Eaton. Their most popular products are the Tomcat All Weather Bait Chunx and the JT Eaton 166004 709-PN Bait.

Let’s start with the fact that both options are less potent than the Just One Bite II product line. They are based on slow-acting diphacinone and are not as toxic. That said, the Just One Bite has a diphacinone-based bait, too, but it comes in larger 16-ounce bars. You can break them into the size you want and get as many pieces as you need.

JT Eaton 709-PN Bait Block Anticoagulant Rodenticide, Peanut Butter Flavor, for Mice and Rats (9 lb Pail of 144)

The JT Eaton poison comes in blocks, which are twice as small as the Just One Bite II chunks. One 9-pound pail includes 144 such blocks. The canister itself has enhanced safety properties as it is tamper-resistant and resealable. Perhaps the major advantage of the JT Eaton product is that it is highly attractive to both mice and rats. The poison blocks are made with a peanut flavor, which is rodents’ favorite taste.

Tomcat All Weather Bait Chunx, 4 Lb

The Tomcat All Weather Bait Chunx is less cost-efficient. You will get a 4-pound pail for some $39, whereas 9 pounds of the JT Eaton bait will cost you around $40. Poison chunks from the Just One Bite II are a bit pricer as an 8lbs canister sells for approximately $55. However, the higher price is due to enhanced product quality. The Tomcat baits contain both food-grade ingredients and enhancers, which make them very palatable to rodents.

What Scientists Say

All the three ingredients work in a different way, but what most scientists agree on is that bromadiolone, bromethalin, and diphacinone are highly effective poisons. As for bromadiolone, scientists with the University of Missouri note that this blood thinner is fatal to rats and mice after a single feeding. Nevertheless, it is important to maintain baits for two weeks or until feeding ceases. This is needed to eliminate the entire rat or mouse population, not just some of them.

Developed in 1985 as an alternative to blood thinners, bromethalin is highly toxic and kills rodents after a single feeding. It is recommended for controlling mice and rats resistant to poisons that act by causing internal bleeding. According to the Purdue University experts, bromethalin is very potent, with death occurring within 36 hours. This compound causes damage to the nervous system, which results in paralysis, convulsions, and death. Their colleagues from the University of Florida describe bromethalin as an effective yet safe acute poison.

Diphacinone is the safest option to use around pets because a rodent needs to consume multiple doses to die. The report published by the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo says that this compound poses a low risk to non-target species but works well against rats. Since there are no immediate poisoning symptoms, rodents do not develop bait shyness. A trial conducted by experts shows that diphacinone can kill the entire rat population in the area after a week of bait placement.

What Do Buyers Say? Popular Customer Reviews

In this video review, Belle tells about the efficiency of Just One Bite poison against field mice. Her local farmer recommended her to buy this product as an effective solution to stop mice from coming in. When mice eat other types of poison, they get all stinky or become crazy and run out in the middle of the room. The nice part about the One Bite Bar poison is that mice put it in their cheeks and take it back to the nest.

“What I noticed is it dries them out from the inside out and it is almost like they just blow away. So I have found them dead and they are all dried up. It really does the trick without any smell,” Belle said. The poison blocks look like corn, so mice love them and try to drag it to it the whole thing.

Another YouTuber, The Average Joe, recommends Just One Bite bait bars for heavy rodent infestations. He put them in a plastic bag, put a towel over it and broke them up with a hammer. “I am doing this video because I am living proof that this stuff works,” Joe said. “But you should keep feeding it to them, you just cannot put one pack down,” he added.

  1. I put Just One Bite in my out house and the mice built a nest over it with toilet paper.. When I opened the out house door they scattered every where. But there were no dead mice to be found anywhere. Not very effective if you ask me.
