Havoc Rat Poison: Effectiveness, Review & Alternatives (Pros & Cons) – Buyer’s Guide

Havoc Rat Poison Effectiveness. When it comes to powerful, fast-acting rodent poisons, you have two options: the Havoc XT Rat Bait Block Pouch and the Havoc Rodenticide Rat & Mouse Bait. Both products are based on brodifacoum, a very toxic second-generation poison.

It kills an animal after a single feeding, which makes this poison extremely dangerous. If you are looking for a powerful poison to quickly eliminate a severe rodent infestation, any of these Havoc baits are exactly what you need. The difference between the two products lies in the formulation. The Havoc XT comes in bait blocks that can be easily secured in place using small holes inside them. The other option is individual packs of pellets that can be distributed in infested areas or mixed with food.

Nevertheless, there are less toxic alternatives from this brand, such as the Neogen Ramik Fish Flavored Weather Resistant Rodenticide. They contain a slow-acting ingredient, diphacinone, and are safer to use around pets and children.

Doses for Rats and Mice: How to Apply Havoc Poison

Mice and rats have different sizes and body weights, meaning they need to take different doses of poison to be killed. For roof and Norway rats, place 4 to 22 bait blocks or 4 to 16 ounces of pellets every 15 to 30 feet. To get rid of house mice, apply one block per placement at intervals of at least 8 feet. In places where mice are active, place two bait blocks. As for pellets, apply half an ounce to two ounces of bait per placement.

If the bait remains untouched for more than a week, place the fresh one. Perhaps you should consider another place for the bait. Also, replace the bait if it is contaminated and remove bait leftover, if any. The dead bodies of rodents must be removed immediately to avoid the risk of your pets consuming the toxic corpse. The most recommended sites for bait placement include areas along the walls, in corners, hard-to-reach spaces, and around gnawed openings. Focus on areas where you have seen signs of rodent activity.

Havoc Rat Poison Reviews

Below, you will find a review of the best Havoc rodent poisons. Both products contain a very potent rodent poison, brodifacoum, but come in different formulations. You may choose rat bait blocks designed to be easily secured in a bait station or smaller pellets that can be sprinkled over the ground or mixed with food items.

Neogen RODENTICIDE Havoc XT Rat Bait Block Pouch

If you can not live with rodents in your house for one more minute, the Havoc rat bait is your heaven-sent opportunity. The active ingredient of this product is brodifacoum. It is a highly toxic poison that inhibits blood clotting in the body, which leads to internal bleeding and death. A single dose of this poison can kill a rodent, so the bait is fast-acting and quickly removes the heaviest infestations.

However, this means that the product poses higher hazards to non-target animals and humans as well. That is why you must place in areas where neither pets nor children have access or/and put the bait in a tamper-resistant bait station. By the way, the manufacturer has added a child-deterring ingredient Bitrex to the formula to make it safer. Another important thing to remember is that the residue of this active ingredient remains in the tissues of dead rodents, meaning any predator that consumes it is most likely to get poisoned, too.

Still, all these risks are due to the bait’s high potency. It kills rats and mice resistant to warfarin and other insecticides. Moreover, few rodents will be able to ignore the Havoc bait as it includes a mixture of highly attractive lures. You will start seeing the first dead rodents 4 or 5 days after bait placement.

While the product might seem to be pretty expensive, it is actually economical because one bag contains as many as 8 pounds of poison blocks. The Havoc XT rat bait is rated highly, with most of the buyers saying that it works great for them.

Neogen Havoc Rodenticide Rat & Mouse Bait Pellet Pack

Neogen Havoc Rodenticide Rat & Mouse Bait: photo

Based on the same active ingredient, brodifacoum, this rodent bait offers the same benefits as the previous one. It is a strong poison that kills rodents after a single feeding and is effective against rats and mice that have developed resistance to other baits. However, this formula offers enhanced palatability and can attract rodents even in areas where alternative food sources are available. The food ingredients include seeds, grains, and oats, providing rats and mice with a variety of flavors.

Formulated in pellets, the bait can be mixed with other food items or easily dropped in small holes. You may sprinkle the pellets all over the ground, but keep in mind that neither children nor non-target animals must have access to that place. The product can be used only in and around agricultural settings. Another distinction lies in the package. The bait comes in an 8-pound pail containing 80 individual packs of pellets, each weighing 40 grams. The pail features a lid that closes tightly to keep the bait fresh and out of reach of pets.

If you are looking for less toxic poisons to use around your home, consider rat and mouse poisons described below. There are diphacinone-based pet-safe products that have a slower mode of action. They kill an animal only after several feedings when enough poison is accumulated in the blood. We have also included a rodent bait containing bromethalin. The substance is very dangerous and kills fast and must be placed in a lockable bait station.

All these products are reliable and of high quality. Use poisons with bait stations. The Ramik Rodent Bait Station is lockable, tamper-resistant, and is made with vertical rods allowing you to secure the bait.

Less Toxic Alternatives: Havoc Rat & Mouse Bait vs Ramik Rat Poison

Neogen produces a great variety of rodent poisons as well as products for professional animal care. Its line of rodenticides includes bait stations, both reusable and disposable, as well as rodent baits for professionals and homeowners. Neogen offers over 30 baits that not only have different active ingredients and formulations but are also created for rodents of different sizes.

Whether your problem is rats and mice or rodents like gophers and moles, you will find a suitable product in Neogen’s assortment. Neogen rodent baits are available in blocks, pellets, bars, powder, and place packs. There is also a non-standard solution: highly palatable soft baits that resemble a slab of meat. These 10-gram sachets remain effective in cold and hot weather conditions and contain food-grade ingredients, such as grain, wheat flour, soft lard, and peanut butter flavor.

Neogen Ramik Green Fish Flavored Rodenticide Nuggets: photo

Now, let’s focus on the less toxic and safer rodent baits manufactured by Neogen. The Neogen Ramik Green Fish Flavored Rodenticide Nuggets. Formulated with .005% diphacinone, the poison acts slower and requires that a rodent eats multiple doses during several days. This precaution is needed to lower the risks for non-target animals and children should they accidentally consume the bait. Once ingested, the poison absorbs into the liver, inhibiting the blood’s ability to clot. When the lethal dose is accumulated in the body, the rodent dies within 4 to 5 days. The product is weather-resistant and is even recommended for use in damp and wet conditions, both indoors and outdoors. Another advantage of this product is the fish flavor characterized by a strong smell.

Neogen Ramik Fish Flavored Weather Resistant Rodenticide: photo

While the above-mentioned bait comes in nuggets, the Neogen Ramik Fish Flavored Weather Resistant Rodenticide is available in mini bars. It features the same active ingredient and weather-resistance properties but has a different formulation. The 4-pound pouch contains 64 bars, each weighing one ounce. Mini bars are very convenient to use and versatile. Since these bars are made with tiny holes, you can hang them on a wire, peg them, or tightly secure in a bait station box. Unlike standard-sized bait blocks, mini bars are small enough to be placed in narrow openings where mice and rats hide.

Neogen Cykill Bromethalin Rodenticide Bait: photo

Another option is the Neogen Cykill Bromethalin Rodenticide Bait. The active ingredient, bromethalin, works in a different way that blood thinners contained in the above-mentioned products. It disrupts metabolic functions in animals so that they become weaker over just a few days. They stop feeding, breathing, and eventually die. Typically, it takes 2 or 3 days for the poison to kill a rodent, which is much faster than blood-thinning baits can do. What makes bromethalin particularly effective is that no mouse or rat populations are resistant to it. That said, the risk of secondary poisoning of predator animals is reduced. Another strong point of this product is that the pellets look very realistic and will no doubt attract rodents.

Kat Sense Rat Bait Station: photo

Although Neogen makes its own reliable bait stations, we recommend placing highly toxic poisons in the Kat Sense Rat Bait Station. The product has advanced safety features and will protect your children, pets, and livestock from potential risk. Not only is this box tamper-resistant and made from sturdy material, but it is also resistant to extreme temperatures and unfavorable weather conditions. The dual-key locking lid makes the bait station totally pet-proof and easier to use. Besides, it is made with metal bars designed to hold the bait tight. The holes are just 2.2 inches in diameter, so your pets will not be able to reach the poison. For added safety, the box comes with mounting brackets allowing you to fix it in one place.

A Non-Toxic Alternative: RatX All-Natural Rat and Mouse Killer

And yet, if you want to fully eliminate the risk for your pet, you should go for the RatX All-Natural Non-Toxic Humane Rat and Mouse Killer. Based on sodium chloride and corn meal gluten, the bait is natural and free of toxic chemicals. The point is that its ingredient is activated only in the bodies of mice and rats. It simply does not work on non-target animals, including other rodent species. There is no risk of secondary poisoning, either.

RatX All-Natural Non-Toxic Humane Rat and Mouse Killer: photo

The main advantage lies in the fact that this poison blocks the sensors that are present only in the bodies of mice and rats. These sensors are vital as they trigger the thirst mechanisms. A poisoned rodent cannot feel thirsty, becomes sluggish, and dies in a while because of the lack of fluids in the body. The lethal dose of a mouse is 10 grams of the poison while 50 grams are required for rats. What we particularly like about the RatX is that it kills mice and rats in a more humane way compared to competitive products. The animals do not experience extreme pain but rather become weak and fall asleep.

In addition to being 100% natural, pet-safe, and humane, this bait contains quality ingredients, such as grains and vegetables. It is chemical-free and will not harm the soils or plants in your garden. Additionally, the RatX removes the problem of dead rat odor. Since the critters die from dehydration, their bodies are mummified and produce little, if any, odor. The 3-pound bag contains easy-to-use pellets for different applications.

  • Active ingredient: Brodifacoum – second generation anticoagulant rodenticide – is highly lethal poison. One feeding is enough.
  • All weather no wax formulation with special attractants and bait ingredients for rapid action with only a single feed. Can be used in and around agricultural buildings.

Havoc is registered in U.S. for control of Norway rats, roof rats, and house mice not only for DIY using in private homes, public, industrial and commercial buildings but for professional pest control and commercial rodent control in and around farm buildings.

Pesticide Management Education Program of Cornell University, providing Service to New York State for the past 50 Years, rates this rodenticide of exceptional activity against a variety of pest rodents: «Havoc is the most active anticoagulant on mice and rats. Yet, research has shown Havoc to be less active on nontarget animals than some multiple feeding anticoagulants»

Pros of Havoc rat and mice bait:

  • Havoc has the lowest lethal dose of any anticoagulant in the market

“Havoc rat poison has always eliminated the problem of vermin in and around our farm. It works quickly and the dead critters don’t smell”
“The rodents are eating this product like mad and dying. As the ads say, it kills them and dehydrates them so there is no stink from their rotting carcasses.”

  • The problem with rodent infestation is solved in a few days! Or within two weeks as maximum:

“This stuff seems to knock them down in place, not giving them enough time to crawl up into a wall”.
“I used this months ago and placed about 10 packets around the house. Within two weeks, all mice were dead!”

  • It works at any time of the year, even in winter. Customers’ reviews speak for themselves:

“I have used this many times and it works great. Easy to use and after while mice don’t come back»; «This is the BEST product out there to get rid of rodents quickly!”.

  • It works on other pesky rodents, too:

“I use this to help control moles and it works great if you know the tricks“.

Cons of product:

The only downside is the price: for 40 twin packs (2 x 50 grams). But in the opinion of one of the customer, it’s better and cheaper than a visit from the exterminator, but can be expensive for someone yet.

That’s all – product has not any other cons. It’s nearly perfect!

Tips from customers:

  1. Customers talk about simple using: “Just open packages and toss the packages around!”.
  2. This is a very toxic mice poison. As usual, people recommend to make sure that pets and kids can’t get at it.

Questions & Answers about Havoc Rat & Mice bait

Can I use the bait inside a house? How to do this best?

Yes, Havoc Rat and Mice bait can be used indoors. You may either scatter the granules around or just open the packet and place it where the rats are likely to run. If you have young children, then you must use this poison bait with great precautions since children may confuse it with sweets and eat. The same is true for your curious pets.

At my attic, there are mice. Shall I leave the bait in there? It is rather difficult for me to get into the attic, so I am afraid that the smell of dead mice will trouble my family afterward.

The chief advantage of this bait action is that after being eaten by mice or rats it causes great dehydration in their bodies and they are eager to find the source of water. As a rule, they manage to leave the house, so you can’t feel any smell of decomposing. In case they haven’t had time to leave the place before death and have stayed at the attic too long, than you may feel discomfort from possible smell.

How long is the shelf life of the product?

You need not be worried about this: Havoc bait may be kept as long as 4 or 5 years and this period will not impact its efficiency as the packets are sealed safely.

Does it work on rats and mice with the same effect?

Yes, in practice the bait attracts and kills both mice and rats.

Is Havoc safe for the environment?

A common concern is whether plants can take up brodifacoum. According to «Great barrier island environmental trust” research the short answer is NO. Because of its low solubility and rapid breakdown in soil Brodifacoum is not accumulated in plants. So don’t be afraid Havok with Brodifacoum – risky for rats, but safe for the environment.

  1. I am controlling pack rats . Much of Arizona has an abundance of packrats and deer mice. I killed almost 100 of a combination of packrats, deer mice and chipmunks and that appears to be not enough.

  2. When Paul Harvey used to be on the radio years ago I’d say 30 years ago at least I started using havoc in my attic and under my covers and stuff like that you did I just hear a small package open and leave 5 or 6 of them the attic all over the place and after while they don’t even need them and you never see him and you never smell them it’s the best stuff I’ve ever had and I always keep it in my house everywhere all the time and I never forget to check to see if they made any and I’m running ou

  3. My son told me about havoc a while ago. I put some down in corners and closets. One particular closet I put alot of it down. I went in there and all of it was gone so I hope the hell they gone too. I will keep on hand in case I might need it. But they are3 it up like candy. And I’m happy bout it too.
